What is DESIGN?
My short definition of design is - a problem-sovling process. More than often, design is understood in noun, such as aesthetics. Depending on where you work, some practitioners call designers as professions that “make things beautiful”. Design’s long history grounded in craftmanship may have contributed to this fixed image of what design stands for and what designers do; but perhaps design community should make more efforts to elevate the current understanding of the notion of design, especially in industry.
I personally love Herbert Simon’s definition of design who describes design as follows: ‘Design is the course of action that turns the current situation into the preferred state of future’.
Design & AI - What is the Future of Design in the AI Era?
I am currently collaborating with industry practitioners and academics to explore in-depth how collaboration between designers and AI evolves into the future. There are many ares to be explored, such as whether designers see AI as merely as a tool they can utilise or as a partner they can collaborate with to co-create value for their creative work. Some ethical considerations are under debate too in regards to who owns the work of art if the work of art is the output from collaboration between designers and AI.
I am looking to share more news and findings here, as work-in-progress work is being finalised. A few things that I’m being part of is to found a new SIG chapter on Design for/with AI, a few new publications on a scale up of a responsible AI imeplmentation from an interdisciplinary perspective, and an evolving design approach that works for industry practitioners when implementing and adopting AI-enabled digital products and services.
